And think about it, fans often have their deepest favorites. Who’s your favorite loli character? What about your favorite yandere character, or even your favorite pair of “are you sure they’re blood related” siblings. In the past we’ve covered blondes, red heads, and here we’ll be looking at the best green haired characters that anime has to offer!
25. Ukyo
Anime: Amnesia Ukyo is like a better looking Jekyll and Hyde who happens to love photography. Or at least that’s what we initially learn about him. We learn of his gentle side and of his um… murderous side, all spinning around our heroine. But then we get into his backstory and we see a much more morbid rendition of the one and only Hyojin Kyoma. As repeatedly seeing your loved one die takes a very drastic toll on you (I’d imagine). He also really doesn’t care where he falls asleep. Is this important? Not really. Is it odd? Maybe. Just be warned that the anime adaptation leaves much to be desired when it comes to Ukyo and is a far cry from the game that it’s based on.
24. Shion Sonozaki
Anime: Higurashi When They Cry Shion is a tough one for sure. I’m going to generalize a bit as not to spoil the series, because some plot points are definitely what make the series everything that it is. With Shion one must ask themselves whether atonement is always possible, and what does it mean to be good? Being a victim of circumstance, but also a dark presence throughout the series, these types of questions get a bit difficult to answer. The unstable green haired Shion, always looking upwards in order to see her twin sister, takes us on one hell of a trip. The key word being hell. You can love her or hate her. But if you spend some time with her you’ll see a shattered psyche and what it takes to piece it back together.
23. Shintarō Midorima
Anime: Kuroko no Basuke (Kuroko’s Basketball) Man, Midorima is an admirable opponent, to say the least. Being one of the tallest characters in the show, with green hair and rimmed glasses that do little to hide his prideful eyes, seeing Midorima walk up on the court must be intimidating. Especially if the horoscope assures him that it is a lucky day, and he has done all of his rituals. Quite superstitious aren’t we? But hell if it meant having the sniper like accuracy this man has I’d hang a rabbits foot around my neck any day of the week. Having basically limitless range, Midorima seems to only count points in threes. Also if you’re into basketball-themed anime then this is a great one. Highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already.
22. Lubbock
Anime: Akame ga Kill! Of the Akame ga Kill cast, Lubbock is by far my favorite. The love-struck idiot who still holds onto his perversions. If you haven’t watched the show, fair warning: it gets a bit dark. So characters like Lubbock who always seem to have a smile on their face and women on their mind really help lighten the mood. And he’s no joke in combat either. Using his Teigu to support his allies, gain mobility, and attack, he makes the maneuver gear from Attack on Titan look like children’s toys.
21. Kaede Kayano
Anime: Assassination Classroom Spoilers for this character ahead. I have the need to preface this because man I did not see her character development coming. Being Aguri’s younger sister, having tentacles and all of that bloodlust. Koro sensei said it himself that she actually had a 50/50 chance of killing him when they had their tentacle duel. But most of all I did not see the French kiss K.O. coming. Luckily, after her rage is quelled she goes back to her usual chipper and kind self. I say “back to”, but it was an act at first. The power of fake it till you make it flows strong in this one!
20. Kaiser de Emperana Beelzebub IV
Anime: Beelzebub Kids do the darndest things don’t they? Refusing to wear clothes, getting shy around other kids, threatening to flood Japan… there is truly never a dull moment. Oh, one of these is not like the others? Well the child is Beelzebub for devil’s sake. And yeah, there is the threat of him peeing so much that he floods Japan. Is his real father there to make sure that doesn’t happen? Of course not. Only a human called Tatsumi Oga. Being a devil spawn Baby Beel also has very unique interests, like violence, weapons, cadavers , and so on. There isn’t enough money in this world that would make me babysit this little bundle of terror.
19. Sakuya Watanuki
Anime: Servamp The man born in a town of liars as a child of liars. This already gives us a hint to his personality. On the outside he seems like a happy, laid back fellow. But of course it’s mostly a bait-and-switch. Sakuya’s parents are probably just as evil as the antagonists that show up in the show. And considering the show is about vampires, that tells you something. But beyond this seeming contradiction of the outside and inside the most important thing to know about Sakuya is his loyalty. When so few people reach out to you, endlessly appreciating the ones who do seems like a no-brainer.
18. Sting Oakley
Anime: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny You know things are going down when the calm and collected character loses his mind. And that is the story of Sting. Especially as the most stable out of the Extended pilots he served as their leader. Being an Extended pilot in itself is something special, as they’re basically living military weapons constantly put under enormous strain and pressure. Now just imagine a usually very calm person who packed it all in, plus a loss of comrades, plus a new Destroy Gundam. Yeah, suffice it to say he came out swinging. But that was the realistic outcome, which is always good to see.
17. Suu
Anime: Monster Musume Slime can be considered hair, right? Among all the girls in the show, Suu is probably the biggest wild card. Usually playing the part of a naïve child who does as she’s told, her few character shifts have shown that this is somewhat of a façade. In actuality she is pretty dangerous, to friend and foe alike. Foes she can poison. Friends she can drown while giving the strangest example of a motor boat known to man. She usually hangs with Papi in order to make the ultimate moe couplet. I swear she’s the reason slime was so popular on YouTube.
16. Senku Ishigami
Anime: Dr. Stone The man, the myth, the legend: Senku. In terms of character, he is your usual child genius prodigy. But in his case this trope was used in an interesting way. On the one hand, he seems superhuman. Like when he counted for nearly 3 millennia. For comparison, Mr. Beast became a legend after spending just one day counting. But on the other hand, he’s given some realism as not everything is a success on the first try. Or even the first few dozen attempts. Ten billion percent, this is the reason he stuck out as a protagonist. Also, major props for his dad. That dude was amazing.
15. Broly
Anime: Dragon Ball Super The legendary Saiyan, destined to only appear in movies and have a green form for some reason. When talking about Broly we are only looking at Dragon Ball Super Broly, as every previous iteration of him is kind of meme trash. But with the newest Akira Toriyama-approved Broly we have something to talk about. Having had a very abusive father and an uncontrollable power it seemed Broly was destined to be a berserker. And when he goes all out it’s no joke. Even two super saiyan blues couldn’t handle him. Freeza was also kind of there. And the battle was just epic. But more importantly, with the newest movie we finally get to understand his anger and get a conclusion that isn’t just a really hard punch to the stomach.
14. Uzu Sanageyama
Anime: Kill la Kill There is no doubt Uzu is dedicated and powerful. I, however, can’t tell if he’s a genius or a dunce. Spoiler warning. From the start Uzu is part of the elite four and as such is pretty powerful. He uses his Tengantsu to predict his opponent’s movements and his Goku Uniform aids him by supplying multiple eyes. Okay, so far so good. He gets defeated by Ryuko, so in order to become stronger the absolute madlad sows his eyes shut! I mean, it helped, he beat Ryuko to an inch of her life and even overheated his Goku Uniform. But has he never heard of just a blindfold? He is so unnecessarily extreme that I love it.
13. Freed Justine
Anime: Fairy Tail Okay I get that everyone in the Thunder God Tribe loves and adores Laxus. But man, Freed really takes it to the next level. Being ready to even go completely against his own beliefs if it meant following his commander. If a certain devil woman never showed Freed that harming your allies, your guild-mates, is pointless and wrong… well who knows what path Freed would have ended up on. He definitely has the powers worthy of a super villain. But luckily he remained the rule-abiding Luxus fanboying mage we later grow to love.
12. Envy
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Out of all the Homunculus, Envy is arguably the worst. And therefore the best. With the power of shape-shifting Envy uses every dirty trick in the book to hit our protagonists where it hurts. Being itself envious of humankind for their comradery and persistence, it constantly tries to tear them down, to affirm its superiority. Aside from maybe Pride, Envy is the most brutal out of the Homunculus. Enjoying every moment of human suffering. And with such a dark personality it only seemed fitting to have one of the most dramatic send offs.
11. Toto Sakigami
Anime: Deadman Wonderland In terms of power, think of Toto Sakigami as a Stain/Monoma crossover from BNHA. In terms of general vibe, think of Juuzou Suzuya from Tokyo Ghoul. And in terms of nickname, think of an Eminem song that made you cry. If the combination of these three mental pictures don’t make someone with green hair sound cool, I don’t know what does. He’s also a very tough cat as even the Wretched Egg had difficulties dealing with him. He has an older sister that is neither his sister nor older than him. But hey no one in Deadman Wonderland is completely sane.
10. Tsuyu Asui
Anime: Boku no Hero Academia To be honest, I initially brushed Tsu off as a very bland and unimportant character, alongside tailman and tapeboy. But to my surprise she has actually grown to be one of the fandom’s favorites. In the first popularity poll in America she actually placed second, beating out characters like All Might and Bakugo. The reason behind this is Tsu is simple and straight to the point. She says what’s on her mind. She doesn’t have superiority or inferiority complexes, nor crazy and flashy abilities. She is just Tsu, a friendly and honest frog lady. And her reality checks hit hard, especially when it was first proposed to save Bakugo.
9. Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck
Anime: Bleach As far as Hollows go Nelliel and her crew are definitely a bit odd. Despite most Hollows needing to kill people in order to survive, Nelliel seems quite opposed to this idea. She even fears the Shinigami, believing that they in fact are the evil ones in the equation. Except Ichigo, she is really fond of Ichigo. We mostly see her in her child form, in which she lisps, uses inappropriate language for a child, and generally just oozes cuteness. But when her adult form appears the plot gets thicker and the action is on.
8. Eureka
Anime: Eureka Seven The story of Eureka Seven is our only hope to avoid an AI takeover. How? We make them fall in love with us. Eureka herself is basically AI in human form created by the Scub Coral. Initially when coming in contact with humans she had no idea how to communicate with them, and even after joining the military her social skills left much to be desired. She does become a kickass pilot though. It’s only after meeting and falling in love with Renton does she begin to understand empathy and tries to atone for all of the brutal things she’d done during her service. I don’t know why, but I am a sucker for “emotion does not compute” stories.
7. Tatsumaki
Anime: One Punch Man Tatsumaki is no Saitama, but man is she a powerhouse. She literally called down an asteroid to kill a dinosaur monster! She can probably sneeze and pull off a shinra tensei level disaster. Now imagine having that power coupled with a huge ego, pride, and an unequally-as-huge body. She’s very tiny, that’s what I’m saying. And that is what Saitama constantly jabs her about, calling her a child. In one instance she got extremely drunk just to spite Saitama and then proceeded to stab Zombiman with a sword while laughing maniacally. She’s a load of work. But I love her every appearance.
6. Yotsugi Ononoki
Anime: Nisemonogatari Never thought I would find a dead person to be so cute, but here we are. She is a tsukumogami, a shikigami, and adorablegami. Initially popping up as a pseudo-antagonist, Ononoki was a weird find as she didn’t follow the usual “girl gets cursed by a random animal” shtick. But God bless that she transitioned to the good guys, as her crossfires with Kiss-shot and Araragi are brilliant. Also her hat is just the right amount of goofy. She proves to be a very valuable ally as her unlimited rulebook has saved the gang multiple times. She also technically saved Araragi by stepping on his face. And for those of you who haven’t seen the show, I’m not giving any context about that statement…
5. Yusaku Kitamura
Anime: Toradora The man who is seemingly everywhere without being noticed. Always ready to interrupt a conversation and scare other characters half to death. Also the sexiest Santa in all of the lands. I really enjoyed Kitamura, his whacky and direct approach to love is something the other characters should really take notes from. He is also a very weird mix of mature and childish. As on one hand, he will pull a Stan and bleach his hair out of frustration. But on the other hand he seemingly took rejection the best out of the group. True, it did take a cat fight for him to get closure. But afterwards he lets it go, unlike most of the others.
4. C.C.
Anime: Code Geass When it comes to female anime characters with green hair, C.C. is probably the first to pop up in your head. While being both immortal and dying for some pizza, C.C. has an interesting place in the Code Geass roster. She is usually aloof, only showing her emotions to Lelouch from time to time. But can you blame her? If you lived as long as she has and been through everything she has, you probably wouldn’t care about much else either. Again, except pizza. She does come through when it counts and has shown pure selflessness in later episodes. Although I am team Kallen, C.C. is a worthy opponent in the waifu wars!
3. Izuku Midoriya
Anime: Boku no Hero Academia Ah Deku. The classic story of a weakling who rose to great heights thanks to his strong heart! And plot armor, of course. By both not knowing how percentages work and remembering that he has legs, Deku has made some real progress throughout the series! In all seriousness, I love Deku as a protagonist. Especially when paired with Bakugo, as I find their rivalry brilliant. No running to a powerful snake-man. Just pure emotions, doubts, ambitions, and fears. And I see the future number 1 hero like the manifestation of exactly those feelings.
2. Gon Freecss
Anime: Hunter x Hunter I swear tif you even think that Gon doesn’t count because only his tips are green, I will Leorio punch you through the screen. Now to Gon. Gon is a lovable little goof who can easily put his life in the hands of his friends, and seems to hold very little judgment or ill will towards people. Okay except the cat lady, he might have gotten a wee bit mad that time around. And this is good. As although it seemed so at the beginning, Gon is far from a one note character. He can be hurtful even to his best friends. He can essentially be mad at the world. But at the end of the day, he remains a good kid.
1. Roronoa Zoro
Anime: One Piece It’s a proven fact that if you can fight with a sword in your mouth, you automatically become 10 times cooler. I’ve seen the peer-reviewed studies. Although Zabuza is a close second, Zoro has this one in the bag! Zoro just makes for the perfect vice-captain of the Straw Hats. The pain he’s willing to endure for his crew is admirable to say the least, as he has shown multiple times. He also balances off Luffy as he can give him & the rest of the crew a good slap in the face when they need it. Zoro is aware that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. And this down-to-earth mentality makes him an excellent advisor and leader. He is also just a badass when it comes to fighting. And the hair, can’t forget the hair.
