These are wise words for any anime fan to live by, considering that simping for a 2D character is typically harmless. Unless, you know, you’re one of those people who’d buy something like a $999 limited edition figurine of your waifu… if so, then more power to you! However, not all waifus are created equal. There are tiers to this stuff. And by extension, there are god-tier waifus and trash-tier waifus. For this ranking we’re going over some anime waifus who belong lower on the tier list… basically towards the bottom. We’ll look at factors like their overall personality, usefulness, and relevance to the story. Let’s get into it!
10. Aqua
Anime: KonoSuba For our first entry, we have a goddess who doesn’t really act like one. Unlike some of the characters on this list, I don’t really dislike Aqua, per se. I’m actually a huge fan of the things she brings into her party’s whole dynamic. I mean, she’s great as a gag character. But as a waifu? Not exactly. She’s just plain useless most of the time, and she isn’t exactly who anyone in their right mind would call “waifu material”. Unless you’re into whiny, shrewd, proudful, and cocky (most of all useless) goddesses, that is!
9. Chi Chi
Anime: Dragon Ball Not that I blame her for nagging (imagine having a husband like Goku), but Chi Chi is one of the naggiest waifus in all of anime. She’s hated because she mirrors a character like Skyler White (from the Breaking Bad series) — an intensely concerned and domineering wife that comes off as annoying to anyone that supports the main character. And in Chi Chi’s case, she often annoys viewers when she does things like deliberately ignoring Goku (DBZ Kai saga), and even outright scolding him for fighting and saving everyone. She doesn’t even seem to care if both her husband and her sons are fighting for the greater good. Heck, it even took Gohan disrespecting her for the first time just to get her to agree to send him to Namek to resurrect their friends!
8. Misa Amane
Anime: Death Note In more “intellectual” and psychologically-stimulating anime like Death Note, characters are either kings or pawns in the grand scheme of things. Sadly for our idol waifu Misa Misa, she became a pawn of one of the most brilliant yet dangerous masterminds in anime. Not that this absolves her of any of her wrongdoings. No matter how you look at it, Misa is either a mass-murdering psychopath who’s obsessed with another mass-murdering psychopath, or a huge liability to Light Yagami’s plans. Her only redeeming quality is that she’s fiercely loyal to Light, which doesn’t really say much about her character, considering what kind of person Light is.
7. Erina Nakiri
Anime: Food Wars I’m a huge fan of tsundere characters. But for some reason, Erina Nakiri is among the very few tsundere waifus I just can’t bring myself to simp for. She comes off as a prideful and snobbish chef more than anything. Which I can imagine pulled all sorts of wrong strings with plenty of the show’s fans as well. Sure she might have had a sad childhood and all, but that doesn’t change the fact that she’s mildly annoying and condescending to the people around her. And of course, let’s not forget that she almost got Soma rejected from Totsuki just for using simple ingredients in her entrance exam. The bright side is that Erina’s haughtiness more or less serves as part of Soma’s motivation to cook at a progressively higher level.
6. Nina Einstein
Anime: Code Geass As much as I’m a massive “bespectacled girl” enthusiast, Nina is just too eccentric for my tastes. Not to mention that she’s also someone who would even kill her classmates for either having a disagreement with her, or standing in her way. I know Yandere characters are often a hit or a miss – but in Nina’s case, it’s a definite miss by a long shot. Her obsession with Euphemia comes off as creepy more than cute. Remember the infamous “table scene”? Yeah, that was uh… memorable, I guess. In the end, it’s a darn shame that she’s deviated drastically from what her character used to be in the earlier episodes. If she didn’t, then I’d actually consider her mid-tier waifu material at the very least.
5. Malty S Melromarc
Anime: The Rising of the Shield Hero No one in anime has ever been called the B-word and deserved it more than Malty Melromarc. She might look like your stereotypical kind and gentle princess that comes with every isekai anime ever, but in reality? She’s a lying, ruthless, manipulative, and heartless piece of scum that even the most tolerable of anime fans would find absolutely abhorrent. Malty has backstabbed so many characters so many times that even her own family isn’t safe from her antics. Coming from someone who has read the light novel this series was based on, trust me when I say that she deserves whatever it is that’s coming to her.
4. Lucy
Anime: Elfen Lied If it isn’t already obvious, I have a pretty neutral stance when it comes to yanderes. But then again, there’s a reason why the majority of the waifus on this list can be classified as a yandere. After all, good yandere characters are one of the hardest to pull off in terms of garnering likability among the fans. Seriously, you cannot get one thing wrong when you’re designing these kinds of characters. Lucy is an example of this. Fact is, I’d probably simp for her if she wasn’t so far off the bad side of the craziness scale. Sure she does have several redeeming traits. But at the end of the day, she’s still a mentally-disturbed psychopath who killed a lot of people. Innocent or otherwise.
3. Sakura Haruno
Anime: Naruto Sakura Haruno being the useless “third wheel” in Naruto and Sasuke’s team is one of the most well-known memes among the anime community. And for a good reason. Honestly, Sakura is pretty useless if you think about it. That’s even after comparing her to characters other than Naruto and Sasuke. She started off as an annoying, violent, and insensitive brat who had done awful things – like making fun of Naruto being an orphan and beating him up for the smallest of things. And let’s not forget about her simping for Sasuke, who has literally tried to kill her and Naruto plenty of times before he finally changed. Talk about obsessing over bad guys!
2. Yuno Gasai
Anime: Future Diary What, you think we’re done with Yanderes and pink-haired anime girls? Not yet! First off, Yuno actually wouldn’t be a bad person to have around. She’s kind, gentle, caring, and protective as all hell… If you’re the main character, that is. Take her facade away and what you get is a cold and manipulative murderer who’s willing to kill even herself just to be with her man. Sure, brave souls among you might say otherwise. But Yuno is one Yandere waifu I personally wouldn’t want to be around in the slightest.
1. Rachel
Anime: Tower of God For our most notable entry, we have Rachel — the Backstabbing and Scheming Queen herself. Disregarding her plain looks alone, Rachel would make a pretty mediocre waifu simply because she’s unworthy of both trust and adoration. Sure, some of the characters on this list have done their fair share of betrayals. But none did any of that in the same crushing fashion as Rachel — much less to someone who’s as close as Rachel is to Bam. Words cannot express how much I dislike this fictional character. But that in and of itself is a testament as to how great of an antagonist she is. Not that this gets her any points as a waifu. She’s a trash-tier waifu at best. A literal Judas-incarnate, now that I think about it, but at least Judas regretted betraying Jesus or something…
