Every time you pay them 250,000 gil you’ll get x38 Mega Phoenixes. This is the most efficient way to farm them. But you can also get a one-time reward of x99 Mega Phoenixes by unlocking Pteryx at the Monster Arena. Pteryx is unlocked by capturing x5 copies of each bird-type enemy. Luckily there are only three, but remember you’ll need five copies of each:
Alcyone (on Bikanel Island) Condor (around Besaid, just outside the village) Simurgh (on the Djose Highroad)
What Are Mega Phoenixes Used For?
When used as a normal item, a Mega Phoenix revives all KO’d party members. This alone is especially useful. But they can also be used to customize Auto-Phoenix onto a piece of armor. Auto-Phoenix automatically has a party member use a Phoenix Down when another member gets KO’d. It is one of the keystone endgame abilities that’s often required on ultimate armor builds. Auto-Phoenix requires x20 Mega Phoenixes to customize. And much like every other item in FFX, Rikku can use Mega Phoenixes in her Mix Overdrive. Here are some of the cooler results: Final Phoenix (Al Bhed Potion + Mega Phoenix): Revives all KO’d party members to full HP. Freedom (Ether + Mega Phoenix): One party member’s abilities cost 0 MP for the duration of battle. Mega Null-All (Fire Gem + Mega Phoenix): Casts NulBlaze, NulShock, NulTide and NulFrost on all allies.
Are These Worth Farming?
Yes! Not only are they super useful as an item, but Auto-Phoenix is widely regarded as one of the required abilities on most ultimate armor builds. It’s so useful! If you’re looking to increase your survivability by a tremendous margin, then this is absolutely an ability worth getting. Yes, it is expensive to farm enough of these to customize everyone’s armor. But you can get ninety-nine for free from the Pteryx unlock, and that might actually be enough to get you through.
