And instead of talking about the writing or the art style, I’m going to sell this show the only way I know how: By gushing about the female characters. So here’s my ranking of the best waifus in Magi.
5. Gyokuen Ren
I’m not going to sit here and pretend like Gyoukuen isn’t waifu material in a really weird and twisted way. Sure, she’s a horrible person and utterly cruel towards everyone in her life. But if there’s one thing anime has thought me, it’s to suspend any type of IRL logic. I mean, we have an entire genre of murderous and cruel anime waifus. So Gyokuen’s appeal shouldn’t be that weird – but I will try to justify myself nevertheless. As an antagonist, she’s absolutely terrifying. She always looks like she’s in control. And you always have this sneaking suspicion that she would do just about anything in order to win. She’s always scheming something and her complete lack of morality, coupled with immense political power, makes her a true force to be reckoned with. I mean, she dared to sing “you should see me in a crown” and then just went and did it. Sure, I can’t say that I love her as much as the rest of the characters in this ranking (who are all rays of positive light in one way or another). But I cannot deny the fact that Gyoukuen definitely has a fan club, and I might hesitantly participate.
4. Yamraiha
Seeing how she was Aladdin’s teacher, it really shouldn’t be surprising that Yamraiha lends herself to some pretty hilarious and laid-back moments. Aladdin’s perviness clashed with Yamraiha’s short temper, which led to plenty of fun gags – but she has more to offer than just that. She also has a few very wholesome scenes where her position as Aladdin’s mentor is really pushed into the spotlight, with her teaching Aladdin inventive ways to use his magic and even helping him pack at one point. Plus, she’s more than capable of carrying her weight on the battlefield – as she seems to both have some extreme fire power, and a deep understanding of magic, that makes her fight in quite creative ways. Final point: I really like her bro relationship with Shar. Their competitiveness always feels good for a laugh – and a few ships as well. I’m just sad that she didn’t get even more screen time.
3. Hakuei Ren
This character is just basically a saint that can do no wrong. She’s out here running the true pacifist playthrough, and it honestly makes for quite the welcoming break from all the scheming and war planning. Hakuei always wants peace, and is even ready to put her own safety on the line just to prove that she means no harm – which is quite the admirable move when you consider her overwhelming wind power. There’s simply nothing one could hate about this character, as she always seems to do the correct thing in the correct way without having any ulterior motives. Unlike a certain mister Singularity. I also love the fact that her djinn is Paimon. She makes for a perfect contrastive force to Hakuei herself, as well as triggering thousands of Genshin Impact players from that one time they listened to the English version of the game.
2. Kougyoku Ren
For me, Kougyoku was the true dark horse of the series. I expected a Wish version of her mother, and ended up with one of the most lovable anime characters I’ve ever seen. Yes, her introduction does have her wound Ugo and act like a maniac, which is an unforgivable sin. But her character progressively gets better from that point on. From her crush on Sinbad to her unlikely friendship with Alibaba, she naturally fits the cast. And her half-shy half-tsundere demeanor has made me chuckle more times than I can count. Plus, she seems like a genuinely nice person that’s doing her best to simply find love in this world – as god knows she didn’t get any of that back home. She’s just endlessly likeable, and deserves to have her smile protected by the wider anime community.
1. Morgiana
Morgiana is one of the best female characters in all of anime. There are two major factors that make her the ultimate waifu:
Her badassery, and Her heart
When it comes to badassery, how do you even compete with a chick who used to be a slave, escaped, and then helped others escape? Oh, and then wore her old prison chains and used them as a weapon for the greater good, as she realized they don’t negatively define her anymore. That type of character progression isn’t something you come by very often. And the fact she was kicking butt even before she got any type of power further showcases what an absolute unit she is. I mean, she’s the princess who will save you from the castle – and I am honestly here for it. And when it comes to her heart, simply put: she’s an amazing person that truly cares about the people in her life. Time and time again she has risked her own life to save her friends. And that type or ride or die mentality will always be admirable. Not to mention she has one of the strongest pout stats in the entire game. And when she’s embarrassed by anything it makes me feel a very positive heartburn sensation. Overall, Morgiana has to be best waifu Magi can offer – and probably one of the greats of all time. Now we just pray for a season three.
