And if anime is the meal, waifus are definitely the meat, as they bring you both happiness and heart problems. For this ranking we’re going to take a look at the delicacy known as Fairy Tail, and rank the top ladies in the show most deserving of the waifu title. Also, in case it wasn’t obvious, don’t expect to see Wendy on here you weirdo.
10. Flare Corona
Although Flare possibly has the unluckiest last name known to man after the year 2020, it’s difficult not to like her. That is, if you like a bit of crazy in your coffee. Although she initially seems like a murder machine that’s not above using the dirtiest tactic to win, she does have a nice redemption arc later in the series that is sure to warm your heart. Normal blushes are good, but genuine yandere blushes are a treasure. Plus we saw during her exchange with Lucy in the resort that her hair can be used in a lot of creative ways. Hint, hint, nudge, nudge.
9. Kagura Mikazuchi
I always love characters that are introduced as these serious and uptight warriors, only to have their human side show later in the series. Kagura is a masterclass when it comes to this, and man does she have the most adorable scene later on in the show. Be it eating Yukino or literally trying to transfer a kiss to Erza as an apology, her more sensitive and goofy side is like candy for the soul. And, of course, her blush game is on point.
8. Virgo
Man, Virgo is just the most hilarious character, isn’t she? Whenever she pops up, you already know that she’s either going to request punishment, ask permission to deliver punishment, or unintentionally give everyone in a five mile radius a nosebleed. Of course, assuming she’s not doing her iconic interpretive dance to solve all the problems in the world. I swear, you can never go wrong with a cute aloof character with a kink.
7. Yukino Aguria
The only thing that makes me dislike Kagura is what her battle with Yukino made me sit through. Like Jesus man, why did my girl Yukino had to go through all that? It’s double sad once the series progresses, as you see that Yukino is like the sweetest little thing ever. She may not stand out as much as some of the other characters on this list. But she is just so sweet and gentle that I couldn’t help but include her as well. The fact that she’s adorable also helped.
6. Ultear Milkovich
As far as character arcs go, this one yanks you all over the place. Is she good, is she evil? Is she somewhere in the middle? Is she single? All good questions I posed frequently. But that all made her character that much more intriguing and deep. Not everyone can be upbeat and love themselves all the time. So Ultear appearing in any situation would add a level of reality to it all that was quite the nice change of pace. And then after “you know what” happens, you kind of just sit there and cry. So consider my heart strings dramatically tugged, and take this place of honor.
5. Cana Alberona
If there’s one combo that’s bound to guarantee a place on the waifu pedestal every time, it’s daddy issues and a bikini. OK jokes aside, Cana was just a joy to watch. Her struggle with her dad, who shall not be named, always felt real and made her more relatable. Well, that and the excessive drinking. She knew when to chill out and hang with the bros, and when to be the somewhat sarcastic voice of reason, which is why it was really hard not to love her.
4. Mirajane Strauss
Mirajane is basically the master of the great waifu duality – as she somehow managed to be incredibly wholesome and adorable, as well as terrifying and badass. Most of the time it’s the badass side though, as she’s just a walking ray of sunshine within the guild… but when her friends are in danger, damn does her tone change. Well either that, or she gets drunk and wants to fight Erza like in the old days. What can I say? She does it all!
3. Lucy Heartfilia
Although it was really easy to dismiss Lucy initially, she becomes an undisputed BAMF throughout the series. I mean, they had so many wholesome and/or hilarious moments that it would honestly be impressive if you managed not to fall in love with their dynamic at least a little bit.
2. Juvia Lockser
Just like Lucy, Juvia initially came on a little too strong – but then matured like a fine wine. I mean, she is still absolutely obsessed with Gray. But once the series got going, we all started obsessing over him as well. So she was no longer a creep but rather a comrade. Jokes aside, Juvia just gets you that perfect blend of hilarious and heartwarming moments. And Fairy Tail would honestly lose most of its charm if it wasn’t for her.
1. Erza Scarlet
I kind of loved Erza ever since she appeared – and that opinion has only wavered once. She’s legitimately the ultimate waifu. She can hang with the boys like it was nobody’s business, get drunk, then fight pillars for some comedy. And she can cause multiple nosebleeds in every fight, pull off badass stats that win key battles, make you cry like someone was cutting onions, and then stab you in the eyes, etc. But she can do no wrong. Erza is the ultimate warrior and the ultimate waifu.
