But today I thought we could look at the other side of the coin. And in the world of anime, there’s a whole lot of tall dudes. Some freakishly tall, others just pretty darn tall. But don’t worry average height characters, your day will come one day. Note: I’m rounding up a lot of these heights so if you see some slight mistakes, don’t come at me with pitchforks.
30. Koro-Sensei
Anime: Assassination Classroom Koro-Sensei looks so goofy that it’s very easy to forget how intimidating he is. He’s stated to be just short off 3 meters tall(9.8 feet) and can tag fighter jets with no issue. And the man is just so lovable, always trying his best for his class and being a child at heart himself. When you finally learn about his backstory, however, it’s all over. You’re in love. It doesn’t matter what your sexual orientation is, no one can survive Koro-Sensei once all of his cards are on the table.
29. Piccolo
Anime: Dragon Ball Z Standing at 2.26 meters tall (7.4 feet) this green goblin has been the tough exterior father figure for decades now. Sure, he started off as a villain. But I doubt that reputation stuck in anyone’s mind, both in-universe and among the audience. His relationship with Gohan was honestly precious, even though Gohan is probably traumatized for life. And whenever he powers up enough to fight with the big boys, I can’t stop a grin from forming on my face.
28. Alucard
Anime: Hellsing Ultimate Although Alucard is the shortest one on this list for now, at just shy of 2 meters tall (6.5 feet), he’s definitely the most intimidating. He’s the ultimate power fantasy, as it seems like nothing can ever hurt him. Even “hurt” is a strong word, nothing can really even phase him. He always looks like he’s having a blast. Having a dry wit and a sense of humor to go along with such power is just the cherry on top of the immortal vampire cake.
27. Thorkell the Tall
Anime: Vinland Saga I mean, he literally has the adjective tall in his name. So I think his place here is undisputed. And standing at 2.3 meters (7.5 feet), I think his nickname is deserved. He’s also a maniac in combat, capable of chucking giant logs like they’re nothing. And having the tenacity to chuckle when his fingers get cut off. We also see a bit of his personality in the latter part of the series, and I absolutely love this not-so-gentle giant.
26. Puri-Puri Prisoner
Anime: One Punch Man One Punch Man has such an ensemble where you never know what you’ll see next. But Puri-Puri Prisoner definitely stuck out to me. His overall design makes him look like a weird mix of goofy and intimidating. And his fighting style only furthers that confusion. He stands at 2.2 meters tall (7.2 feet) and is one of the more powerful non-Saitama characters, but he also strips naked and has angel wings when fighting. And is way too horny. Only in anime are these types of combinations possible.
25. Ban
Anime: The Seven Deadly Sins Ban was just an instant hit. He has that bad boy vibe and also seems like a fighter competent enough to stand alongside Meliodas. He’s 2.1 meters (6.8 feet) of raw lovable energy. And we were all here for it. He has a tragic backstory, a set goal, and a very believable and adorable romance. Basically the full package. Now we just have to wait for the finale to be adapted to anime for Ban’s ultimate badassery to be on full display.
24. Nyanta
Anime: Log Horizon I’m just going to get this out of the way: I’m not a furry, and Nyanta is actually the same height as Naotsugu in the data-books (1.8 meters/6 feet tall). Nyanta honestly feels like the most perfect person ever. He’s kind to everyone, reliable, strong, clever, patient, understanding, the man literally hasn’t shown a single flaw in the first two seasons of the show. I’m surprised, and a bit offended, that he only has one fan-girl. As he deserves a stan army or something.
23. All Might
Anime: My Hero Academia It’s hard to tell what aspect of All Might is more overpowered: his strength, or his charisma. On the one hand, he’s 2.2 meters (7.2 feet)of raw muscle and can change the weather with a single punch. On the other hand, he could probably soothe an entire nursery with just a smile. It’s honestly hard to tell, but I enjoyed every scene he was a part of. Even after you know what happened. His public persona is especially hilarious, just because of how over the top it is.
22. Sebastian Michaelis
Anime: Black Butler Sebastian may not be as tall as most of the characters on this list. He stands at just 1.8 meters (6 feet) but he makes up for it with raw eye candy appeal. Again, it doesn’t matter what your orientation may be if. You’re offered a hot demon butler who can both make some kick-ass tea and kick the ass of your enemies, you take that hot butler without a second thought! Even a literal Grim Reaper couldn’t keep their hands off of our boy Sebastian.
21. Legoshi
Anime: Beastars I’m really not helping my case with the furry thing, am I? But I can’t help it. Legoshi is such a lovable character! He’s actually ashamed of his height, which is 1.8 meters (6 feet) as he hates being seen as a predator. And this makes sense once you get to know him. He’s such a docile and loving soul that having fangs and such a large body seems contradictory. Okay, except for that one time when he was a complete badass. But even when he’s completely slouched forward, he still towers over most of his classmates.
20. Gouda Takeo
Anime: My Love Story!! While we’re on the topic of gentle giants, I might as well take the chance to talk about Gouda. Gouda is the ultimate good boy. A religion could be formed around him levels of good boy, who just hangs out with his best e-boy buddy and is trying to find love. He will 100% sacrifice his own happiness so that others can be happy. He will take a bullet for anyone anytime, and he will definitely not ever get to second base. So even the church loves him. He’s the ultimate package. And there’s no evidence to state otherwise. He is also 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall, so woof woof.
19. Osamu Dazai
Anime: Bungo Stray Dogs I can’t say that Dazai is also a good boy. But he is definitely interesting. He’s 1.8 meters tall (6 feet) tall so he’s the bottom range for this list. But he definitely sticks out personality-wise. For one, the man is always trying to off himself. His introduction was literally him trying to drown himself. But even though he acts like that, he’s constantly chipper and chatty. So that leads you to believe that he’s just a gag character. But then you learn about his past and you honestly don’t know what to think anymore, but I’m sure you’re very intrigued.
18. Yami
Anime: Black Clover Yami is by far one of my favorite shounen sensei characters. He’s just so nonchalant about everything that I can’t help but fanboy over him. Even when he’s staring death in the face, he will just state how “oh, I guess it is time for me to overcome my limits or something” and then does exactly that. He’s 1.8 meters (6 feet) of pure samurai badass (with bowel issues) goodness. He doesn’t get all touchy-feely with his squad, but he doesn’t have to. They all know he appreciates them in his own macho way.
17. Ryuk
Anime: Death Note Ryuk is both so endearing and so terrifying at the same time. On the one hand, his personality just comes off as whacky. As he constantly just thinks about eating apples, to the point that he seems like he is going through rehab if Light doesn’t supply any with any. And he generally just floats around minding his own business. On the other hand, he’s a 2.4 meter (8 foot) tall demon who can and will end your life if you stop being entertaining to him. I personally still wouldn’t mind if he was the last thing I saw before going under.
16. Shizuo Heiwajima
Anime: Durarara! I usually don’t like characters whose core personality trait is getting angry. But I’ll be damned if this bartender hulk didn’t find a way to my heart. He doesn’t look all that intimidating, as he looks like your average 1.8 meter (6 foot) guy who just came off work. But then you see him chucking vending machines all over the city and your perception quickly changes. However, his backstory and personality work very well with these outbursts. So he never feels like a gag character, but rather like a hunk with anger issues who you could totally fix in a relationship.
15. Leorio Paradinight
Anime: Hunter x Hunter (2011) Although Leorio had so little screen time in the show, and was objectively the weakest of the main cast, he was probably the most likable one of the bunch. His backstory shows how noble his cause is. And he’s one of the few Hunters who’s not in it for power of privilege, but rather for the means to become a doctor. His reunion with Gon makes me cry to this day. And he landed one of the most satisfying punches in the entire series. He’s 1.9 meters ( 6.2 feet ) tall, and I love every inch of him. Okay that sounds a bit wrong…
14. Dio Brando
Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Dio is one of those antagonists who’s so well written that you just can’t hate him.
Even when he’s killing your favorite character, you still can’t find it in your heart to fully hate the man.
It’s not like his deeds are justified. But rather that he’s so over the top and dramatic with a handful of playful narcissism that he’s just too entertaining to watch.
This guy is 1.9 meters tall (6.2 feet) and the memes that surround this man will one day be crucial in describing this past decade to historians.
13. Sinbad
Anime: Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic Personally I think of Sinbad as the reverse Dio, as he’s definitely a good guy… but I would still keep an eye on him. This is because rather than the usual “I do good things because being good is good” mentality, Sinbad is more interested in power, influence, and the good that he can do with it later on. So he will kill you if it means world peace, or at least I think so. Physically he’s extremely impressive, at 1.8 meters (6 feet) with a god’s body and the power of one as well. The man literally blew up a mountain once just to prove a point.
12. Jiraiya
Anime: Naruto: Shippuden Fair warning: spoilers ahead. Naruto didn’t kill off characters very frequently. But when they did, they made sure the entire fanbase cried their heart out. Jiraya’s death struck extremely hard, as the man is so goofy and lovable that it was hard to imagine him not being part of the show anymore. His antics with young Naruto never failed to put a smile on my face. Even in that one Boruto arc. And he was the only reason I was glad Pain got defeated. He’s 1.9 meters (6.2 feet) tall, but his crazy hair (and the giant frog he’s probably sitting on) makes him out to be way taller at a glance.
11. Shogo Makishima
Anime: Psycho-Pass If you love your psychotic and oddly hot bad boys then Shogo should be on your radar already. I use the word “psychotic” loosely here, as god knows I cannot figure this man out. Seemingly no one can except Shinya. He doesn’t flinch at murder, but doesn’t have a bloodlust either. He’s just an anomaly of society who happens to be handy with a blade. He’s 1.8 meters tall (6 feet) tall, has white hair, and eyes that have seen death itself, but failed to blink. So it’s pretty safe to say that he can be rather intimidating when he wants to be.
10. Jōichirō Yukihira
Anime: Food Wars! If there was a competition for being an amazing father, Joichiro would add another win to his arsenal. Sure, he does follow the anime trope of being absent most of the time. But it doesn’t seem to affect Souma all that much. After all, Joichiro showed him a life Souma can now strive towards. And he made sure his son was well prepared to go down that path. The man is also extremely impressive on his own, with cooking skills so good that a devoted monk will break his fast just to grab a bite. He’s 1.8 meters tall (6 feet), but the shadow he has left behind is way bigger than that.
9. Kamina
Anime: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann I’ve said it before and I will say it again: I would follow this man to the ends of the earth, his charisma is just that infectious. He always keeps his head up high and lifts up everyone in his crew. Sometimes he even lifts up his enemies, because why not at this point. He stands at 1.8 meters (6 feet) with his iconic glasses and cape, making him instantly recognizable even from just a glance. I just love this guy, he honestly carried a lot of the earlier episodes.
8. Edward Newgate
Anime: One Piece In case you thought I was just going to list 1.8 meter tall characters until the end, feast your eyes upon Whitebeard. He’s an absolute unit, no other way to describe him. He’s standing at 6.6 metres (21.6 feet) with enough scars to make the bravest warriors second-guess their ideas of fighting him. But besides his large stature, what’s most important about this man is the size of his heart. Metaphorically. Everyone in his crew looks up to him as if he was their biological father, as he truly does care for each and every one of them. Heck, even I want to call him papa from time to time.
7. Alphonse Elric
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Edward and Alphonse definitely made for one of the best duos of all time. Even though they were flesh and blood, or should I say flesh and mostly metal, they couldn’t be any more different. While Ed is blowing his fifth fuse since breakfast, Alphonse stays calm mostly all the time. Sometimes making a hilarious UwU face too. Plus, while Al stands at a staggering 2.2 metres (7.2 feet), Ed is still easily mistaken for a child. Nevertheless, when things get serious, you can expect them both to be pretty badass.
6. Escanor
Anime: The Seven Deadly Sins Whenever Daytime Escanor appears on screen, you just know that something amazing is about to happen. His enormous pride leaves him with some of the best one-liners in anime. And his objectively abundant power makes for some of the most hyped fights. Although he’s so unassuming in his night-time form, the second the Sun rises you’re presented with 3.2 meters (10.4 feet) of raw masculinity and confidence. If only his fight with Meliodas wasn’t a PowerPoint presentation, I could have died happy.
5. Gildarts Clive
Anime: Fairy Tail Gildarts was just the ultimate senpai in my eyes. He was powerful enough to flick away characters into space. His presence was so well-known that people would move the city around so that he wouldn’t have to turn when going somewhere. And yet he was down-to-earth enough to make people feel at ease when around him. He may not be the tallest character in Fairy Tail, considering that he’s just shy of 1.9 metres (6.2 feet). But he was by far my favorite in the show, so I had to include him.
4. Bulat
Anime: Akame ga Kill! I firmly support Tatsumi’s decision to love this man way before he got connected to any of the females. Just as Gildarts is the ultimate senpai, Bulat is the ultimate older brother character. He watches out for Tatsumi constantly, making sure that he grows stronger both physically and mentally, and never makes him feel out of place. He’s an absolute pleasure to be around. But he can also really carry his weight in a fight. I was honestly surprised that he’s just 1.8 meters (6 feet) tall, as he always seemed bigger in my eyes.
3. Joseph Joestar
Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency I know a lot of people would probably prefer the badboy Joestar, Kujo. But I honestly can’t get enough of Joseph. The man is so whacky that he never fails to make me laugh. Be it because he’s dressed up as a woman yelling about tequila, or because he was literally late to his own funeral. He’s about the same height as Dio, so around 1.9 meters (6.2 feet). And he has that same muscle-bound physique the show is known for.
2. Ira Gamagoori
Anime: Kill la Kill Gamagoori is probably one of my favorite supporting characters in anime, especially if he’s paired up with Mako. There’s just something so hilarious and adorable about watching this mountain of a man, at nearly 2.7 meters (8.8 feet), interact with the little ball of energy known as Mako. Because even though he puts up a tough front, he still does acknowledge her. And even acts compassionately towards her. If the two of them were ever cast in a slice-of-life romance I would eat it up immediately.
1. Hisoka Morow
Anime: Hunter x Hunter (2011) I had to finish the list off with everyone’s favourite murder clown, Hisoka. He’s 1.9 meters tall (6.2 feet) so we might not be ending on a strong note in the height department. But the character is so iconic that I think he deserves this placement. He’s the wild card of the Hunter x Hunter franchise, as he doesn’t abide to do good or evil. But rather to the principles of fun and dull. He can commit genocide one moment, and then play some dodgeball the next. And it’s this unpredictability, as well as the absolute madman tactics he uses in fights, that makes him one of the most legendary antagonists in anime (with some height to back him up).
