I would go as far as saying that Oblivion has the best spell-making mechanics in the TES series. However, making the right spells is not always as easy as it seems. I have made my fair share of mistakes while trying to create the perfect spell, but I did manage to come across a massive list of useful combinations that have served me quite well in recent years. It was a pretty massive list, though, and I know that many of you just want the best spells in the game. So I’ve rearranged my own list here featuring only top-notch spells that you can make in Oblivion for your magical comfort.
15. The De-Targeting Spell
Effects:
Drain Speed 100 pts in 20 ft for 2 secs on Target
Also known among Oblivion players as a “hide in plain sight” spell, this spell basically forces whoever’s in range of its effect zone to de-target the player. Why? Because it exploits one of the game’s main mechanics: foes cannot target you if they can’t move. It basically drains their entire speed to force them into ignoring you – even if you’re right in front of them!
14. Damaging Paralysis
Effects:
Paralyze for x secs on Target Shock Damage x pts for x secs on Target Absorb Health x pts for x secs on Target Fire Damage x pts for x secs on Target
Those times where your opponents are running at full speed towards you can be quite scary. But here’s a spell that will ease the pressure and make things much easier for you. This one forces paralysis on any target that it hits whilst also dealing a ton of extra damage for as many seconds as possible (depending on your skills as a spell-crafter).
13. Weapon Breaker
Effects:
Paralyze for 1 sec on Target Disintegrate Weapon x pts on Target
I absolutely love this combo of effects. What it does is freeze any enemy that it hits whilst also causing their weapons to receive tremendous amounts of damage. A one-second paralysis is a cheap effective magicka-wise, and the Disintegrate Weapon effect is super useful when fighting against heavily armed foes. All in all, a superb combination of spells that works well if fighting various foes at once.
12. The Anti-Undead Spell
Effects:
Fire Damage x pts for x secs on Touch Turn Undead up to level x for x secs on Touch
Touch a zombie and watch them flee whilst bursting in flames. I mean, I don’t really think there’s much explaining to do as to why I consider this one of the finest spell combos in Oblivion.
11. Predator Spell
Effects:
Invisibility for x secs on Self Fortify Magicka 100 pts for x secs on Self Fire/Frost/Shock/Health Damage x pts for x sec on Target
This is the spell you’ll want to use if you’re trying to become anything close to the Predator in vanilla Oblivion. I mean, sure, you could download a mod that gives you similar abilities on a permanent basis, but where’s the challenge in that? The Predator spell is one to be activated whenever your plan of attack is to eliminate your foes without them noticing what hit them. You need to be quite the expert wizard to pull this one-off. But if you happen to have the necessary skillset, it would be a no-brainer.
10. Walk on Lava
Effects:
Water Walking for x secs on Self Water Walking for x secs on Self Fortify Acrobatics x pts for x secs on Self Fortify Speed x pts for x secs on Self Restore Health x pts for x secs on Self
Not many combinations of spells are as appealing as this one, which combines four different effects for you to be able to walk in lava-like an absolute boss. Why skip around for that bridge a few meters away when you can actually use a spell to traverse the hottest fluid in Oblivion? The planes of hell will no longer be a challenge when your wizardry allows you to summon these powers upon yourself!
9. Ninja Movement Spell
Effects:
Feather y pts for x secs on Self Fortify Acrobatics y pts for x secs on Self
Are you in need of running away from trouble? Are foes overwhelming you or pushing you against a corner? Do you happen to be late for a work meeting? Worry not, my friend. The Ninja Movement spell will basically let you become a force to reckon with by giving you enough speed to outrun anything that Oblivion or Cyrodiil throws against you.
8. Drain Paralysis
Effects:
Absorb Health x pts for x secs on Touch Paralyze for x secs on Target
This fantastic combination of spells is good enough to stop any foe in their tracks. What’s more, it’ll give you some of their health to boot. This is actually a very popular and simple combination that does require a bit too much magicka to work, but the easiness with which you can cast this spell makes it extremely worth it to have around instead of owning a whole lot of potions and carrying them in your inventory.
7. Max Armor Spell
Effects:
Shield 70 pts for x secs on Self Fire Shield 5 pts for x secs on Self Frost Shield 5 pts for x secs on Self Shock Shield 5 pts for x secs on Self
Are you wandering around with no armor? Love that lightweight feeling? Then get ready to have all of your magicka drained and cast this spell. It will basically max out your armor for as many seconds as you can afford, making you impervious to many attacks and allowing you to resist countless others. When it comes to defensive spells, many players claim that this is the ultimate one that you can create. It’s up to you to decide whether it’s the one for you or not.
6. Ultimate Regen Spell
Effects:
Fortify Willpower 100 pts for 15 secs on Self Restore Health x pts for 15 secs on Self Invisibility for 15 secs on Self
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been taking some heavy damage in the last few seconds. Simply cast this amazing piece of magic and watch your health go back to its former glory without worrying about your foes – invisibility is the way of the future!
5. Dungeon Explorer
Effects:
Light in 30 ft for x secs on Self Detect Life in 50 ft for x secs on Self
Why would you go around carrying a torch that occupies a very important space in your hands? When you can instead turn your whole damn body into a giant torch! This combination of spells will allow you to shine bright like a diamond as you walk around those dark dungeons that are probably filled with rewards. The dark will no longer be an issue. You only need to activate it once every 30 seconds, which is more than enough time to get your magicka back.
4. Stopper Spell
Effects:
Burden 100 pts for x secs on Target Drain Strength 100 pts for x secs on Target
Have you ever wanted to stop an enemy right in their tracks without having to spend magicka damaging them? This is the spell that you’ll want to use. It’s the ultimate weapon for those who need to get away in a hurry, or for those who’d like to focus on a single enemy at a time. Simply cast the spell on your enemy and watch them freeze in place.
3. Ultimate FFA
Effects:
Frenzy x ft for 60 secs on Target Rally x pts for 60 secs on Target
This is a fantastic spell to use if you’re invisible when activated, although it’s not entirely necessary for that to be true in order to make this work. It makes all foes go crazy and attack everything in sight! If you’re not invisible, I suggest you find a place to hide after casting it.
2. Off to Bed
Effects:
Damage Fatigue 100 pts for y secs on Touch
Running out of stamina makes your enemies drop like flies for a few seconds, which basically turns them into asleep ragdolls. Cast this spell upon them and watch those fools fall to the ground.
1. Movement Enhancer
Effects:
Fortify Athletics 100 pts for 1 sec on Self Fortify Speed 100 pts for 1 sec on Self
By far the best combination of movement effects in the game. This spell will allow you to go as close as flying as you can in Oblivion. Try not to burn the ground with friction as you pass by, though!
