When they were first shown in Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds, they completely changed the game forever, introducing archetypes with consistent searchers, ludicrous amounts of special summoning, and insanely powerful removal cards. So if you’re looking to give this synchro deck a whirl, then you’re in the right place.
15. Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North
One of the reasons Blackwing took the metagame by storm was their consistent special summoning, allowing them to synchro summon very often. Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North is a tuner that, when it’s normal summoned, can special summon a level 4 or lower Blackwing monster from your graveyard. This sets you up perfectly for a level 6 or lower synchro summon! The fact that Blizzard is practically a one-card synchro monster makes it worth playing in any sort of Blackwing deck.
14. Blackwing Armor Master
The very first Blackwing synchro we’ll be taking a look at here is Blackwing Armor Master. It’s a level 7 synchro that requires a Blackwing tuner and any non-tuner monster. The first awesome thing about this guy is that he can’t be destroyed by battle, nor do you take any battle damage from any attacks involving this card. Pretty great right? And not only does that make Blackwing – Armor Master an amazing way to defend yourself, but this ability comes in handy with his second effect: Any monster that this card attacks has a “Wedge counter” placed on it. You can then remove all Wedge counters from monsters your opponent controls, and each monster that has a counter removed, gets their attack reduced to 0! It doesn’t matter how strong your opponent’s monsters are. Because with Blackwing – Armor Master on your side, they can be weak and defeated in no time.
13. Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn
Remember the days when people actually tribute summoned? Well Blackwing – Sirocco the Dawn completely bypass tributes, allowing you to normal summon it on its own… but only while your opponent controls a monster(s) and you don’t. This nets you a 2000 attack monster for your normal summon, which isn’t too shabby. On top of that, Sirocco has a neat little way of boosting your Blackwing monsters. You can target a Blackwing monster you control and have it gain attack equal to the total attack of all Blackwings on your side of the field, excluding Sirocco. Other Blackwings you control can’t attack the turn you activate this effect, but it’s well worth it! This effect allows you to get over any defensive wall your opponent puts up.
12. Blackwing – Nothung the Starlight
This guy is the deck’s resident level 6 synchro, meaning if you’ve only got Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North in your hand, then this is your go-to. Blackwing – Nothung the Starlight does so much for the deck that it’s almost dizzying. First, it burns your opponent for 800 damage when it enters the battlefield. It then weakens an opponent’s monster by 800 attack and defense, and then it allows you to normal summon an extra Blackwing every turn! This is amazing for filling your board with more Blackwings – and who doesn’t want that? If you have another tuner in your hand but no way to summon it, this card is a great way of getting it out onto the field, and helping you access those higher-level synchro monsters.
11. Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor
Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor is one of the weirdest tuners Yu-Gi-Oh has ever seen. You can effectively synchro summon using this card and another card in your graveyard as the synchro materials, by banishing the required materials from the graveyard. The downside here is that the summoned synchro monster has its effects negated. But this is still an amazing way of getting some big monsters out on the board.
10. Blackwing – Silverwind the Ascendant
Every good deck needs consistent monster removal. And that’s exactly what Blackwing – Silverwind the Ascendant does! When this card is synchro summoned, you can destroy two monsters with defense stats lower than this card’s attack stat. And with 2800 attack, you’ll be able to get over pretty much anything. This effect isn’t once per turn either, meaning if you can pull off multiple synchro summons in a turn (and if any deck can pull that off, it’s Blackwings!) then you can effectively wipe out every single one of your opponent’s monsters.
9. Assault Blackwing – Chidori the Rain Sprinkling
This guy can help to deal the final blow to your opponent, especially in the late game. Here’s what it does: For every Blackwing monster in your graveyard, this card gains a whopping 300 attack. Blackwings are a deck that can synchro summon many times over, meaning by the end of the game, your graveyard will be absolutely packed with Blackwing monsters. You could get this to well over 4000 attack points in a flash. And on top of that, when this card is sent to the graveyard, you can target another Winged-beast synchro monster in your graveyard and special summon it to your side of the field, ensuring that you’re never left defenseless.
8. Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame
Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame was one of the cards that made Blackwings so consistent. When it destroys a monster in battle, you can special summon any Blackwing monster with 1500 or less attack from your deck to your side of the field, with its effects negated. And this card is no pushover by itself. Coming with 1700 attack on a level 4 monster, this guy is strong. So the odds of you pulling off this effect are pretty high.
7. Delta Crow – Anti Reverse
Spells and traps are only getting more powerful in Yu-Gi-Oh! So if you want to stand a chance at winning, you’ll need a way to get rid of them, and fast! This trap card is one of the best spell/trap removals the game has ever seen. Here’s why: While you control a Blackwing monster, you can destroy every single face-down spell and trap card they control. If that wasn’t broken enough for you, there’s more: If you control exactly 3 Blackwing monsters (which isn’t a hard board state to setup) then you can activate this card from your hand! This means you don’t have to set it to the field and worry about it getting destroyed by an opponent’s card effect. So this card’s a real treasure worth considering.
6. Blackwing – Bora the Spear
Don’t you just love monsters that don’t eat up your normal summon? Blackwing – Bora the Spear special summons itself from your hand while you control another Blackwing monster. Which, in a Blackwing deck, is a ludicrously easy feat. This guy also deals piercing battle damage, so if you’ve got your opponent playing defense, they might still be taking hits to their life points.
5. Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind
Not only does this tuner special summon itself for free, but it also gives you a great way to deal with your opponent’s biggest monsters. Like Bora, Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind can special summons itself from your hand while you control another Blackwing monster. Easy! And then once per turn, you can target a monster your opponent controls and halve its attack and defense. Unlike most stat modifiers in Yu-Gi-Oh, this effect is actually permanent, meaning as long as that monster is on the field, it’ll be stuck at half attack and defense! You can even target the same monster repeatedly if your opponent has some ludicrously high attackers (like Deskbots, Megalith, or various other OTK decks that can get over 10,000 attack on a single monster!)
4. Assault Blackwing – Raikiri the Rain Shower
Assault Blackwing – Raikiri the Rain Shower is scary good at getting rid of your opponent’s cards. Every single turn, you can destroy cards your opponent controls, up to the number of Blackwing monsters you control. This isn’t even limited to a single type of card either. Spells, traps, monsters, they’re all ready to go down. And if this list has shown us anything, it’s that Blackwings can swarm the field in a flash. Meaning this card is an amazing way to completely board-wipe your opponent.
3. Blackwing – Kalut the Moon Shadow
This card alone makes attacking any Blackwing monster terrifying. Here’s what it does: Any time a Blackwing is attacked or is attacking, you can discard this from your hand during the damage step to give your Blackwing monster a 1400 attack point boost! Really handy for running over your opponent’s monsters, but for me, the way I love using this card is letting my opponent attack my Blackwings thinking they’ve got the battle in the bag… Only to discard Kalut and mess up their entire game plan.
2. Black Whirlwind
I’d say Black Whirlwind took Blackwings from being an okay deck, right up to an almost overpowered one. Every time your normal summon a Blackwing, you can add another Blackwing monster from your deck to your hand, provided that the searched monster has less attack than the one you just summoned. You can search out cards like Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind, who can then immediately special summon themselves from your hand, setting you up perfectly for all sorts of synchro plays too. Black Whirlwind is especially potent if you play it with Blackwing – Nothung the Starlight, who lets you normal summon twice in a turn. This can basically double your search power!
1. Blackwing Full Armor Master
It’s no surprise that the best monster in a synchro deck is its synchro boss monster. And with that said, this Blackwing card is possibly one of the best synchros ever made! This level 10 monster is completely unaffected by other card effects, meaning even if your opponent throws down some non-targeting removal, this guy isn’t going anywhere. Blackwing Full Armor Master takes the concept of Wedge counters and bumps it up a notch: Every time a monster on the field activates its effect, you can place a Wedge counter on that card. Then once per turn, you can take control of any monster your opponent controls with a Wedge counter on it. And that’s not all! On top of that, you can blow up every card on the field with a Wedge counter during the end phase, assuming you’ve already taken the monsters you feel like taking. Blackwing Full Armor Master’s sheer power, combined with how difficult it is to remove him from the field, makes this arguably the most “must-have” Blackwing card of them all.
